Grab your friends and family, and let’s have fun in our Open Casting Workshop! Open Casting involves the use of various colored & sized chips of glass that fill a pre-formed mold. Everyone will design their own flora or fauna. Any of our workshops are great for your first experience working with kiln-formed glass. Options include: Paint & Fuse, Strip Construction, Lattice Construction – Stringer or Noodle Bowls, and Open Casting. Only one project per workshop so first one to reserve for a time gets to choose.
Participants can learn about equipment, tools, and materials that transform raw glass into a memorable experience. When working in the kiln-forming studio, you are working with glass in its solid state to create and design your object. The assembled work is then put into a kiln, where it will be fired over a minimum 12-hour cycle to fuse the layers.
In this 2-hour (maximum) kiln-formed glass workshop, each participant will learn basic techniques of kiln-formed glass to make one individual item. You will work with your instructor to design, cut, layer, cast, or paint glass to create a design on a ~6×6 tile which can be slumped post-class.
Participants will work under guidance to learn to cut, paint, cast, and fuse glass sheets and parts to create their piece. Accessory pieces available include confetti, stringers, noodles, and pebbles. Once completed, it will be loaded into a kiln and fired for at least one 12-hour cycle. Your piece will be available for pick up in 5-7 business days from the original class date.
The kiln-forming studio at Glassblowing Houston uses and teaches exclusively with COE96 glass. All fusing and slumping are completed post-class. Please bring a sketchbook and writing utensils. Protective eyewear and close-toed shoes are required. An N-95 mask is needed to work with powders.
Everyone who makes glass with us must read and sign our online safety waiver. If participants are under 18, the safety waiver must be read and signed by the parent or legal guardian with the child’s name as the participant.
We have a no-refund policy. 72 hours’ notice is required to reschedule.
We look forward to making glass with you.
